If you’re visiting Belize, you’re probably booking an airline flight. Many people wonder which airport is the best one to fly into when they visit. If you’re traveling internationally, you only have one option.
Philip Goldson International Airport
This is the only international airport in Belize. Its airport code is BZE. Sometimes referred to as Belize International Airport, this airport is equipped to handle daily international air traffic with a runway that’s more than 9,500 feet long.
The airport is located in the village of Ladyville. It’s about a half-hour drive to Belize City.
Airlines That Fly Into The Philip Goldson International Airport
The following airlines have direct, nonstop flights from all major U.S. airports to Philip Goldson:
- American Airlines.
- Delta.
- Southwest.
- United.
These Canadian airlines fly into Philip Goldson during the high tourist season (Nov to April):
- Air Canada.
- WestJet.
Distance to Major Locations in Belize
How long a drive is it to your destination? Here’s the driving time from the airport to:
- Ambergris Caye: (30 minutes by local flight or 1.30 hours by boat)
- Corozal: 90 minutes.
- Dangriga: Two hours.
- Orange Walk: 45 minutes.
- Placencia: Three hours.
- San Ignacio: 90 minutes.
Transportation From the Belize International Airport
Once you arrive at the airport, you have several options for traveling to your hotel or other destination.
Taxis: Taxis are usually plentiful at the airport, but be sure to use only taxis that are officially licensed by the government. Taxis are convenient and fast, but they are the most expensive way to travel. You also might have to share a cab.
Shared shuttle: Shared shuttles are a lower-cost alternative to taxis. The downside to a shared shuttle is that you have to wait until one is ready to go, and that depends on their schedule. With a shared shuttle, your ride will take longer and your van might be crowded.
Private shuttle: This is the safest, most convenient and most comfortable way to travel from the airport and around Belize. In a private shuttle, you won’t have to worry about sharing your van or picking up other passengers. You can relax while your driver gets you safely to your destination.
Local Airlines
Two airlines crisscross the country to make travel between major areas fast and easy. Tropic Air and Maya Island Air operate small, 15-people “puddle jumpers” that fly in and out of the municipal airports at Caye Caulker, Corozal, Dangriga, Orange Walk, Placencia, Punta Gorda, and other locations.
Flying time between locations is usually an hour or less. Since these airplanes are small, book early if you’re traveling during peak season.
