Fall is when many travelers head back to work or school, so it’s a great time to enjoy Belize travel without all the crowds. And many resorts offer “off season” discounts. Combined with affordable airfare offered by United, Southwest, American, and Delta Airlines, fall is a superb time to visit the country.
Not only is fall in Belize a time of great weather, it’s also the perfect time to enjoy some exciting festivals and celebrations.
September 10 – The Battle of St. George’s Caye Day
There’s a small island just a few miles offshore of Belize City named St. George’s Caye. Today, it’s home to a luxury resort, but 200 years ago, it was the site of a historic naval battle between a ragtag British fleet and the Spanish Navy. On September 10, 1798, the British prevailed over a superior Spanish force, leading to Belize becoming the only British colony in Central America.
Since many people who work overseas return to visit Belize during September, it’s a great chance to see Belizeans celebrating their heritage.
September 21 – Independence Day
The patriotic celebrations continue non-stop until September 21, which marks the date in 1981 when Belize finally gained full independence from Great Britain. Along with a tremendous showing of the national colors (red, white, and blue) and the singing of patriotic songs, the day’s events are capped off with a huge fireworks show.
